So is the game actually bad or are people just back to giving low ratings to anything with NTR tag?
It depends on how you see it. If it was “Normal NTR game” it is mediocre at worst. The problem is the premise acting like you had a chance of winning against NTR when you, in fact, don’t. Your advancement with the heroines are significantly slower than your rival, so defeat is inevitable. You can win them back, but basically “Claiming heroine first” is impossible.
There is a vanilla mode added, so if all you want is straightforward dating sim, there is that. But the competition mode is awful. Thankfully the NTR events are actually optional.
